Hi everyone. I recently asked two professors to write me a reference letters. I am just wondering, to what extend should I show thanks? Certainly it is good, if not proper, to write them a card, but is it inappropriate or maybe going too overboard if I actually get them a gift? Not anything expensive or grand, maybe something simple, just to show my thanks. What should I get? Or is a card enough? (One is a professor for this semester, and one is a past professor).
Stay away from sending professors gifts, in most cases they will not even be allowed to accept any gifts from students (past or present) - bribery and all that. :)
I don´t want to crush your applepie, but professors write reference letters all the time. For all kinds of students and all kinds of situations - it is part of their job decription. There is nothing special or particularly friendly about a professor if he/she writes you a reference letter or even a letter of recommendation. Sorry... even a card or a tiny box of chocolates would be going overboard.
If you really think that saying "thank you" in person is not enough, write a very simple, short letter. Refer to whatever you needed that letter for and say that thanks to their (prompt, if applicable) help, you will now be able to complete your XY or apply for ABC.

I just wanting to thank him for always explaining things so clearly yet making sure the class was not boring. I want to give him a thank you card at the end of the term but I'm not sure if i should or not. Would that seem too unusual?
Actually, he'd probably appreciate it. I've wanted to thank a couple teachers I had back in high school except I fear they are now dead (they were old back then and it's now been 40 years) or I can't find any trail of them to send a thank you to them. I think most good teachers worry whether they are getting through to their students at all and a thank you from even just one student would make all the stress and heartache and dealing with admininstration worth it all. Most teachers go into teaching to help young minds but they don't always get the feedback and encouragement they hope for from their students. Just like you if you taught someone something, a little thank you card would make you feel you did a good thing and that all your efforts had teh proper effect.
About 5 years ago I asked my professor to write me a recommendation letter and she did which was very good and I sent her a thank you card. Well, I decided to go to graduate school and I asked her to update it, which she did. Should I send her another thank you card?

How to thank a professor for writing you a letter of reccomendation?
I am a female college graduate and my male professor wrote me a stellar letter of reccomendation for a job.
How do I thank him appropriately. It's somewhat awkward because he is a male and I am a female and I dont want it to be too gushy-mushy.

I believe that a thank you card with a personalised message reading something along the lines of "Thank you for the wonderful letter of recommendation. I appreciate the time and effort involved, and your belief in my abilities means a great deal. Once again, Thank you.
