I don't think the poster is asking if they should give a thank-you for a gift; the situation is different because the gift came in a thank-you card for another gift, presumably one the poster gave to begin with. I agree that a phone call or an in-person is probably the best bet here. I've given gifts where the thank-you is handmade and probably took more time than the gift did - the thank-you cards going back and forth could be endless! I was always told that a verbal thank-you was preferably to a written one, and doing both is unnecessary.

I'm writing a thank you card for my son's classmates and teachers. He has about 12 classmates and 5 teachers. How can I address the card without sounding too formal? (i.e. Dear Staff and Students)
"Dear Staff and Students" sounds good or "Dear All" or avoid addressing it at all and just start "Thank you all" or something to that affect.
I had a wonderful party but I am having trouble coming up with Thank You Card language. Everyone chipped in and I got a large gift card. In other words, there were no presents except the gift card. This is also a formal business setting. A lot of the people who chipped in did not show up.
Any ideas?

Welcome back from Thanksgiving break! Thanks for bearing with me while I took myself offline for a week. I certainly am feeling refreshed, and certainly got a lot done – including a new Planning Tool for you guys.
Now available as a PDF is a Thank You Card Tracker (available for download here ) to help you track who gave you what and make sure you properly thank them for it in a personal way. I know from personal experience, thank you writing can get out of hand really, really fast, and I sort of wish I had made this for myself before I started popping them out! The PDF is designed with a large left margin so you can hole punch them and stick them in a binder for safe keeping.
