Keep it simple. Write about your esteem for their thoughtfulness. Don't mention money in the card as some people are anxious about not giving a more personal gift.
Hard call about mailing it. Everyone loves to get something nice in their mailbox but if you're friendly with his boss it would probably be wierd to get that in the mail.

We just received our first wedding gift! It was a rather expensive gift from his grandparents - they paid for some home renovations for us for about $2000.
