In a Housewarming Invitation... tacky to ask party go-ers to bring a bottle of wine?
White Wine

We just moved into a new home, and we have wonderful friends that are looking forward to coming to our housewarming. I had never considered mentioning for anyone to bring a gift or anything in our invitation, but 2 people have now said..."you have an empty liquor cabinet and a bare wine rack... ask people to bring a bottle of their favorite liquor to put on your shelf, or a bottle of wine to put in your rack". I am not sure how I feel about that, Opinions out there on whether this would be something you would be "happy to do" if you saw it in your invitation, or would it be "tacky". (Mind you, these are all close friends and family, not just acquaintances)

Yes I'd say if I saw it on the invite, I would instantly think tacky, for a couple reasons; first, you are the ones having the party. And you should be expected to provide food and drinks for your guests. Next, it is tacky to ask people to bring anything, period, unless it is some type of potluck where each guest brings a dish. Last, it seems as if the 2 people (who I assume are among the guests) really want you to have some booze in the house, which is tacky on their part.

Most people coming to a housewarming party will bring a gift. Whether or not it's wine or liquor depends on them. Many will bring a gift that will be part of your home, and others will bring a bottle of wine. The other thing that could happen, is even though you are sending out an invite, people may still call and ask if they can bring something. Then you might say, well we can always use another bottle of wine. But don't ask them; let them ask you.

How do you state on an invitation, "In lieu of gifts, please bring a bottle of your favorite wine?"?

My parents started their marriage with a wedding shower as their "reception" and asked everyone to bring a bottle of wine. We are celebrating their 40th anniversary in June, and would like to continue the tradition. I am trying to figure a way to word this properly and keep things as short as possible too. Thank you.
This is an exception to the "rule" in a sense that all the guests coming have known my parents for a long long time and were even at their wedding. If this were any other invitation, no I would not say anything in regards to gifts.
If you cannot answer the question directly, please do not respond.

This is a specific situation, so I do not need an explanation of why you do not ask for gifts on an invitation.

Thank you.
I was looking for other ways of stating the above question.
Thank you JJ, that is perfect!!

I would say in lieu of OTHER gifts, please bring a bottle of your favorite wine, since you should acknowledge that the wine is a gift.

I am planning a bridal shower. Is it bad manners to ask guests to bring a bottle of their favorite wine?

The bridal shower is going to be fabulous cocktail party with wonderful decorations, hor deourves and expensive favors, and I thought it would help with mingling and be fun if everyone bought a bottle of their favorite (inexpensive) wine...so is it bad manners? If it is ok, what is the best way to word it on the invitation?

It's a great question that we get asked all the time at http://www.sippd.com. Having a BYOW (Bring Your Own Wine) party is the perfect way to get people to taste and discuss new wines.

How to word it: Bring your favorite bottle of wine and your favorite recipe for pairing it.

Collect the recipe cards and give them to the Bride To Be.
