I prefer snail mail..i like getting stuff in the mail.

Which one do you think is more appropriate?

Always snail mail for formal invitations. Email invites are only for less casual events, such as bachelorette parties, casual dinners or bowling trips.

Here are some suggestions:

Step 1
Before you write an invitation, decide on the tone, voice and level of formality, based on the event itself. This will dictate whether you hand-write the cards or have them printed, and whether you choose a preprinted or personalized invitation.

Step 2
Choose the type of invite you want, and order or buy a few more than you think you'll need. This will permit you to add some guests to your list at the last minute, if necessary. For small parties, you may want to hand-write the invitations on stationery or blank cards. For large gatherings, consider ordering printed invitations.

Step 3
Determine the wording of your invite based on the level of formality. For example, a formal invitation might say, 'Dr. and Mrs. Stanley request the pleasure of your company,' whereas a more casual note might say, 'Please join us.'
Sample Invitation:

Dear Sir / Madam, (Delete as applicable)

You are cordially invited to a fancy dress ball celebrating the birthday of XXXXX. The event will take place at the Neverlate Ranch on Friday the 13th of June. Proceedings shall commence with a display of fireworks at 7pm sharp and a program of events will be issued to you upon your arrival. Include directions on any invite if the invitees aren't familiar with your location.

I have been invited to a friend's confirmation dinner and I have been told it is formal, but as I have never been to anything like this before, I don't know what dress to be looking for, what is appropriate etc.
I am only 16 so I am not really into the whole, long dresses is is good, answer. I found a dress but it's a bit promy.

somethng like that would be nice, but i wouldn't say you should where black, blue, or yellow would be nice or a colour really and truly it doesn't have to be black or you could just chose a black dress and jazz it up a bit with sum nice jewlerry

What is the correct expression for dinner jacket??

In the UK, you wouldn't be expected to wear a DJ or tuxedo unless the invite specifically states "black tie". However, for a formal affair, you do need to wear a smart suit.
