Engagement Party Invitation

My best friend is hosting an engagement party for me & my fiance. She is providing light hors d'oeuvres, but she does not have the money to pay for alcohol. Is it appropriate to put "cash bar" on the engagement invitations or should she just let guests find that out once they get to the restaurant?

It is absolutely appropriate, and even appreciated, to announce on the invitation that guests will need to purchase their own beverages. You can include this information at the bottom of the invitation, separated from the rest of the information so that it is a little bit of an afterthought (not the main event)!

We are having a winter wedding in December of 2009... but we need ideas for our engagement party invitations for our engagement party this August. Any ideas???

That's the part of the invitation I don't need help with. There are no gifts at this engagement party... it's a party for the two families to meet before the wedding... thanks for the laugh though.

You could also just use a summer theme, since it's so hot that time of year. But whatever your theme, just make invitations to coordinate. If the theme is "wedding" then have "engagement party" as the theme.

We live in Florida and are going to Hawaii to have an engagement party with my family and friends (since most of them wont be able to attend). I was born and raised in Hawaii and havent seen my family in 3 years so this will be nice. We dont have a lot of money and so we're using some of our wedding fund for our tickets (we also got REALLY GOOD DEALS on tickets) - my sister is offering to buy us engagement party invitations and because we're a little low on money (not to mention that we cant take a lot back with us on a flight) - my question is, how can we politely ask for money or giftcards on the invitation? Any advice would be nice. Thanks!
To answer the question -my family is throwing us the party (nothing fancy, more like a luau type of thing, more traditional) the people attending will be my family and a few childhood friends. My fiance and myself have already purchased our tickets for less than $900 for 2 round trip total (thats $1000 LESS than normal) - so NO ONE is paying for our flights. My parents are giving out the invitations - they were thinking of putting "Enveloped gifts greatly appreciated" - i dont think anything is wrong with that if these invites are going to family only who most likely wont be able to attend the event next year.

There is no polite way to ask for money or giftcards. You just don't do it. It's tacky and gives the appearance of greed.

The only way to accomplish this is to not list anything; when people want to attend the event and give gifts, your family may make suggestions by word of mouth. However, this does not mean mentioning, "Hey, just so you know, Bob and Susan want money for a gift," without it being SOLICITED. It would be okay for someone to respond to, "I'd like to get Bob and Susan something for their wedding. What should I bring?", and this person say, "I think they'd prefer a cash gift. Thank you for asking."

But to state on an invitation that you'd like a gift of ANY kind is simply bad taste. It gives people the impression that unless they're coughing up money, they're not really welcome at your event.
