Engagement Invite

I would like to invite everyone to the engagement, but, then, it would be as big as the wedding! I am inviting close family and friends to the engagement and distant relatives and out of town guests to the wedding only, plus everyone at the engagement party,is invited to the wedding, is this ok?

Yes, that's totally fine. Out-of-town guests will not expect to invited to any local events (parties, showers, etc).

What IS rude is to invite people to a shower or engagement party and then NOT invite them to the wedding. It's like saying, "I want you to buy me a present but I don't like you enough to want you at my wedding."

So your plan sounds perfect.

We're only allowed to have 50 people to the space provided. So we won't be inviting everyone that's going to be invited to the wedding to the engagement party.

I'm worried about people bringing guests. If we invited 25 people should we count on them bringing one guest each? Should we invite less than we're allowed so we don't go over?

make up a list of people you want to invite (granted these should be people who are invited to the wedding) and then see how many you come up with. take into account if they are married, have kids or a significant other. figure out your total then add or subtract until you get about 50. (you probably need to give the number to the caterer or whoever is cooking so you know how much food you will need). send out an invitation and get your head count from your RSVPs.

My fiance and I are planning our wedding along with an engagement party. We are wanting to have a small wedding, close friends and family. However we both know a lot of people in our town and want to invite some to the engagement party but not the wedding. Is that wrong?
I really don't know why I asked because I already know what I am going to do. I appreciate the input.

Anyone invited to an engagement party will be expecting to be invited to the wedding also. They will feel awkward and disappointed at not receiving an invitation. Some may even call to say, "We didn't get our invitation..." and then you'll have to explain that they aren't invited. There's no way to tactfully say at an engagement party, "Well we look forward to seeing those of you we invite at the wedding." What you can do is throw a nice "just married" party and invite all those people you didn't invite to the engagement party and wedding. But make sure to say no gifts, please.

Family and VERY close friends. Never invite anyone to the engagement party who wouldn't be invited to the actual wedding. My fiance and I had our immediate families (including aunts, uncles, and grandparents), and the friends who we had asked to be in our wedding. It was a blast!

My fiance and I are having a destination wedding with 40 guests, my mother is planning an engagement party and wanted to know if she could invite people who aren't invited to the wedding? We are planning a post wedding party with all of our family and friends later on.

Engagement parties celebrate your engagement. You can invite whoever you want.
Your budget dictates your wedding guestlist--so people should be more understanding. Usually, if people can't be involved in the wedding, they want to be involved in something else--say, engagement parties or a bridal shower... It's best not to completely exclude anyone, I think.
