Is it mandatory to specifically mention that you're having a cocktail hour, and the time it starts, in a wedding invitation?


The time the cocktail hour starts is the time the reception starts. You don't have to specify that the first part of the reception is the cocktail hour; most people know that already. Also, if you put something like "cocktail hour at 4:30" then folks are going to know that the dinner isn't until 5:30. Some of them will show up as close to 5:30 as possible, and they'll end up being late and walking in during dinner. That cocktail hour is really time to make sure that the stragglers still arrive on time for the dinner.

Does anyone have any suggestions for smart or sophisticated drinks to bring to the party? I know there will be a lot of hip/sophisticated people there and I don't want to look like a redneck or something.


Try some of the flavored martini mixers. I had some and it was fabulous. Make sure to read the bottle to make sure it calls for a common liquor to mix it with. And they come in such cool looking bottles, they are sure to be a hit!

Regardless of whether it is an open bar or cash bar...it means that drinks will be available at 8pm and onwards.
