Baby Box

I read that box turtles eat diffrens things then baby box turtles so can someone tell mee what baby box turtles eat.

ive had adult box turtles before and they mainly eat fruits and veggies and insects and worms. Ex:super worms, some beetles, and the cheapest thing u can do is catch abnd feed him/her your own earth worms. i have yet to come across a reptile that doesnt like worms

I had box turtle when I was a kid and never had any type of problems. I came across a baby
box turtle two months ago and decided to keep it(bc finding a baby box turtle is like finding a gem). It wont eat though. Im thinking it might when Im not watching bc its still pretty fast so cant figure it out. I put earthworms in his aquarium but he kinda retreats or hides. Has anyone had this problem maybe he just doesnt like worms idk.

When its so young i would suggest more leafy greens not protien.

We have a pretty big aquarium with 2 adults geckos & another smaller one with a baby box turtle, which stays in the water most of the time.

There are dozens of reasons why this is a bad idea - but I'll give you a few basics that should be enough to make a decision.

Basic housing - habitat needs -Leopards do not need nor are usually provided with UVB lighting - box turtle need UVB lighting

substrate - box turtles are best kept with a soil based substrate totally unsuited to geckos

humidity - while geckos do benefit from a humid hide area the remainder of their habitat is much more arid - box turtles, especially babies do best with humidity in the 80% range

heat source - geckos are usually best served with an UTH to simulate heated rocks and outcroppings to thermoregulate, box turtles seek heat come from the top down and actually dig down to cool off in an effort to thermoregulate

These are just some glaring habitat based issues, toss in the standard cautions against mixing species which include: dietary differences, sharing of pathogens - germs, bacteria, viruses, parasites and the dangers increase exponentially.

My Boyfriend brought me home a baby box turtle thats only a little bigger than a quater. What should i put in his cage to make him feel more at home? I already have some rocks and grass in there. Should i put a heat lamp/pad in there also? What should i feed him?

Turtles are not the easiest pets to care for. They need very specific care that includes a very large enclosure (most people end up building there own because the ones they sell at pet stores are not very good) , special UV lighting, exact temperatures and specially prepared diets. The turtles need these things to survive in captivity. Most pet turtles die because the owners don't know how to or cannot care for them properly and give them the things they need. There you can find care sheets for all types of turtles sold as pets. Get the turtle everything it needs right away. It might be expensive to set everything up but otherwise your turtle will die. If you decide the turtle is not for you then call a local reptile rescue center and they will take it. You could bring it back to the pet store but they would just sell it to someone else that couldn't care for it and it would die anyway. Good luck

I have a baby box turtle thats a little less than a year old and very small. I usually feed him a couple of meal worms a day, and on occasion an earthworm if i catch one. Ive tried to give him fruit, veggies, and turtle pellet food but he isnt interested in anything but worms. anything else i should try?

60% or more of the box turtle diet is composed of animal matter. Some of the "animal" matter they eat in the wild includes: slugs, snails, worms, grubs, caterpillars, beetles, pill bugs, sow bugs, centipedes, crickets, grasshoppers, spiders, flies, crawfish and carrion. Essentially, if a box turtle can catch it, it will eat it.

The rest of the box turtle's diet is composed plant matter. A large part of which is fungi (mushrooms etc). Moss, berries and grass are also eaten.

Pellet type foods (An often overlooked factor of pyramiding is grain based diets. These are the pellet food that some claim to be essential to health. They typically contain soy, wheat and or rice. These are high in omega 6 fatty acids which has a negative effect on health. They also have an acidifying effect which causes a leaching of bone. They are high in phytate which binds calcium and other minerals. They also have an unfavorable ca/ph ratio and a low ca/mg ratio which has a negative impact on calcium metabolism. Grains alter Vit D metabolism. Diets high in grains can have a negative impact on bone growth in spite of adequate exposure to sunshine.
