My mom is having a big party on saturday for her 40th birthday and I'm helping her plan it. There will be adults and kids there so I need some ideas of what to do for entertainment and stuff for both age groups. there really isnt a theme or anything, so if you have any ideas or suggestions that would be awesome :] thanks!

When I say "adult" I don't mean the dirty adult version. I try to do something special every year for my girlfriends birthday, but I'm having a hard time coming up with anything this year that will fit in my budget (about $400). She likes to drink, eat, and roller skate (she's 36!). We live in Fort Worth, but may have to go to Dallas. Let me know what you think!
When picking a location you really have four choices.
1. Home – Inside. Most of the people I know are most comfortable with this approach. You know your house, you can decorate when you want (or when you have the time) and you “set the rules” for the party.
2. Home – Outside Same address but a whole different decorating approach and vibe to the party. Lots of fun but make sure you have options if the weather doesn’t cooperate.
3. Restaurant/Party Room. Lots of the headaches go away. But will you have privacy? Will you have enough time? Does it fit your budget?
4. The Moveable Feast. Often referred to as the pub crawl this can be great fun and friends can come and go as they see fit. One of the best parties I ever attended went to a club for cocktails, a restaurant for appetizers, a different restaurant for dinner, a ball game, followed by a tavern for a nightcap. Takes some planning and cooperation from the places you visit but you can “customize” an evening for the guest of honor by going to their favorite places.

In March I will have a family birthday party for 19 family members.
9 adults will celebrate their birthdays that are in Feb. & March. My question is, what kind of fun food to serve 7 children, ages between 5-12 yrs. old. I was thinking of having a round table of food for just the children to choose from. And a different table of food for the adults.
You can do two separate tables if you desire. It can be kind of fun to specialize the food for the little ones and not worry about if they will want to eat foods deemed more "adult-like". However, you can save time and effort by trying to do things that would be liked by all. One thing we often do when catering to both adults and children is to cook a ham in the crockpot (not the hams with the bone in it and everything though. The ones you can buy in either halfs or whole. I know they are put out by Schnieder's and Maple Leaf as well as some other brands like store bands and such). Anyway, all you do is throw it in the crockpot (you may need to do two depending on how many people or what else you are having). Maybe you could borrow a crockpot. Anyway, put it in with just an inch of water in the bottom (sometimes I add a touch of honey or syrup to the water). Then turn the crock pot on and forget about it for 6-8 hours. Then have an assortment of buns or croissants. Kids love ham (at least in my family they do) and adults seem to like it too. Someone could have just ham or could choose to make a sandwich out of it. Other than that, finger foods usually work best (hors duerve style) like mini-sausage rolls, mini-quiche, etc. You can usually pick up an assorted box in the frozen foods section. How about a crock-pot (can you tell I'm big on the crock-pot thing, lol?) full of those cocktail sized meatballs. They're usually pretty popular. Kebobs are always fun (fruit or meat or veggie). I think the fruit platter and vegie platter with dip are always great standard items. Fancy sandwiches can be done to satisfy both adults and children as well (PB, PB&J or PB & banana for the kids and tuna, egg salad, salmon, etc. for the adults). If you get your bread sliced length wise at the bakery, you lay one slice flat, put you filling, roll is up like a jelly roll and slice it into little round, swirly looking sandwiches. Anyway, I could go on and on but I won't. I better go do some other things. Best of Luck with your party.
I am having my husband's family over for his birthday and need something low-fuss, cheap to fix for 12. Any suggestions?
One of my family's favorites is a soup party. You can pick a couple of kinds of soup that are fairly popular, including your husband's favorite, and then make them in crock pots so that they stay warm and people can eat and mingle. Make a soup with some interesting noodles or that's tasty and you have a favorite for kids to old folks. This also solves the "some people are vegetarians" kinds of problems - you can make one soup without any meat for vegetarians, or even be sensitive to someone's allergies, etc. Also, you'll find that most soups are super easy and cheap. A couple of suggestions would be chili, potato soup, cheesy broccoli, chicken noodle, veggie beef, or just veggie.
The additions are easy as well - you can put out bowls of cheese cubes, for snacking or adding to soups, pretzels, bread and butter, breadsticks, etc - really, the additions are as you please and as much as you choose. Leftovers are nice and easy too - just chuck in Tupperware and you have lunch for tomorrow. So borrow some crock pots and have a much easier day for preparation - hey, go with cupcakes or decorated cookies for dessert and do the whole thing with as little muss and fuss as possible while looking like you've made a ton of food.
