I want to do something special with the sympathy cards we got when my brother passed away. We've got about 40 or 50. I am not really wanting to put them in a scrapbook. But if I can't come up with something else I guess that is what I will do.
We used to display our Christmas cards by taking a large juice can and remove both ends. Wrap yarn or ribbon around the can, lengthwise until it is covered and then slipping the cards under a string all around the can. It can take a lot of cards and doen't take up a lot of space.
I love the idea from ukquilte of scanning the cards.

My father died about a month and a half ago and we have a TON of sympathy cards. We of course don't want to get rid of them so I was trying to find creative ideas on how to keep them. Any ideas?
Scrapbooking is a great idea. If you have a picture of your dad with the person who sent the card, use them together on the layout. Add items that link them together - for example, if he had a fishing buddy, you might add something related to that, like a fishing permit.
The extra cards could be put in one or more layouts together, showing how loved your dad was. If some shared a special interest with your dad, put those together, etc.
My sympathies for your loss ...

Someone asked me that question yesterday and I don't know the answer. I suggested if you have the person's e-mail, send a short e-mail acknowledgment. If your niece sends a sympathy card, and you hardly know her as she lives overseas, e-mail her father whom you of course know well.
Otherwise, keep a list of cards received, and if one of the people phones, of course thank them for the card. Is there actually etiquette for this?
There probably is some form of etiquette but I wouldnt expect a thank you card for sending a sympathy card, I think that its understood that the person is bereaved and has other things to deal with other than thank you notes.
Lots of people put a thank you notice in the local press.
My mother wonders if it's appropriate to send sympathy cards within the family. At first glance, I believe that grieving family members need all the support they can get, so a thoughtful card is the way to go. Any protocols we should be following?
Definitely not to family members and definitely not to anyone else - the proper thing to do is to write a personal message on plain paper (with no date).
Note: I wish to remind 'readers' that Rules of Etiquette are exactly that ... Rules.
My mom passed away in September and I have a lot of mass cards and sympathy cards. I don't really want to keep them because they depress me but I don't feel right just throwing them out. Any ideas on what I should do with them?
I'm sorry to hear that.
It's good that you realize that you're not ready to deal with those cards right now.
Put them into storage in an air-tight plastic container (out of the sunlight, so they don't fade). One day, when you've recovered from some of the grief, you'll be able to go back and read them, and they'll remind you of how much you and everyone else loved your mom. :)

Sympathy Card: The Proper Way To Create One
Writing a sympathy card is one of the sincerest and most memorable way to extend your condolences to someone who has just lost a loved one. While in most situations, people would send some flowers, still nothing can compare to the level of personal touch that a sympathy card can give.
You have your own choice on how personal you would like it to be in terms of the card itself. Would you buy a commercially manufactured card or create one yourself? Most people would buy ready made funeral cards with pre-written verses or messages in it to save them the trouble of writing their own. They can get these from Melbourne funeral services . But you could show deeper sincerity if you would write your own condolence letter or sympathy card messages.
