Every time I walk by an employee at work they seem to feel obligated to ask "How are you doing?", "How's it going?", "What's up?". They don't care. I don't care. Why bother? We're not progressing in forming a friendship and will probably never see each other again. Why waste your breath with your hollow greetings and expect me to feel obligated to return them?

Because without some small greeting, people tend to view other people as stuck up.

I agree it is very pointless.

If you want to end this silly practice, be completely honest, and that person will never ask again, or maybe not even speak to you again which is also socially rewarding.

When I encountered so much of the empty greeting at church, I ignored it for as long as I could, then one day I was in a really sour mood because something really tragic happened in my personal life, so I bluntly said " Our friend killed himself in our home yesterday" *which was the absolute truth).

Me and a friend had a falling out (reasons too complicated to go into right now, but just take my word for it that the friendship had to fade quietly). Whether it will come back again, I don't know, but it doesn't look good right now. At any rate, this person is still on my Contact list. Should I still send greetings to this person on holidays, i.e., 4th of July, Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc., to this person along with everyone else on my Contact list?

Yes...give it time. By sending a greeting this way they know that you haven't given up completely.
