Can I get one online, I went to golf courses online and I don't see how u can purchase one.

Add to any gift a list of the reasons why you appreciate him. Perhaps have it inscribed on a wall plague.

Please don't get a joke card. In my 20+ years of working with fathers, it has been rare that a joke card that makes fun of his abilities is really appreciated.

I wrote this to "Dear Abby" for Father's Day, March 19, 2005.

APPRECIATION FOR JOB WELL DONE IS WHAT FATHERS WANT TO HEAR

DEAR ABBY: Today is Father's Day, so why don't we try to do more for dear old Dad than give him the usual greeting card that promotes the idea that all dads are imbeciles, followed by a collect call to see what he thought of the card. (Father's Day is the day when the most collect calls are made.)

We should treat our fathers the way we treat our mothers on Mother's Day and show them we appreciate them for being there. Yes, you probably tell your father all the time that you love him, but the minds of men work differently. Anyone can say "I love you," but as men, knowing that we are appreciated for a job well done is what really gets us teary-eyed.

Something else you can do -- especially you sons out there (but daughters can do it, too) -- is to make sure Dad has been to the doctor for a checkup, including depression screening. This can go a long way toward making sure he's here on Father's Day next year.

I wasn't raised by my father, but by a stepfather. Although we did not see eye-to-eye on many things, I would not be the person I am today if it were not for him. This man, who spent years climbing on top of heavy construction equipment to prepare the ground for many of the homes, businesses, roads and highways of Southern California, now finds it difficult to get into a car. Although none of the houses or roads have his name on them, they are all testaments to his life and the lives of men like him.

So today, let's do something extra for Dad, without him pulling out his wallet to pay for it. -- George McCasland, Overland Park, Kansas

Remember, there's a lot of us fathers sitting in nursing homes whose children live too far away to visit. Contact an activities director about volunteering Sunday morning. Read a list out loud about why you appreciated your father.

I have a $100 gift certificate burning a hole im my pocket to a golf shop. What should I buy?

I am still in the early phases of my golf career (broke 100 twice). Should I dish out some of my own money for a nice driver? Buy a fairway wood? Buy a wedge? Buy a putter? All of my equipment is ok. I bought used equipment about a year ago that is name brand and previously highly rated. Chipping and putting are my biggest weakness but I have not practiced either too much. My game is not very long. Even when hitting well I am typically chipping for par.

Any ideas?

What are the best places to golf in the Chicagoland area?

What are the best places to golf in the Chicagoland area?
My boyfriend and I are going to move to the area. He loves to golf and I would like to know about the different golf courses/centers in the area. I have never golfed. It is almost his birthday and I would like to surprise him with some type of golfing excursion or golfing gift certificates. Do you have any ideas as to where/what I can give him?

This might be a good place to start (http://www.golfchicago.com/). It has listings for all of the courses in and around Chicago. You can search for courses according to area.

What are the best places to golf in San Diego county?

I recently moved to San Diego with my boyfriend. My boyfriend loves to golf and I would like to know about the different golf courses/centers in the area. It is almost his birthday and I would like to surprise him with some type of golfing excursion or golfing gift certificates. Do you have any ideas as to where/what I can give him?

You have something like 82 golf courses to choose from in the county and you can't go too far wrong. The ones people from all over the country travel here to play are:

Torrey Pines - the only public course on the professional circuit. If a golfer plays one course in San Diego (or in California for that matter) in his/her lifetime, it will be Torrey Pines.

Steele Canyon - a newer course out past El Cajon, but people travel from all over to play it.

The Aviara golf course in Carlsbad - Adjoining the Four Seasons Aviara, another very popular course.

The golf course at the Rancho Bernardo Inn in Rancho Bernardo - another course people travel from all over to play.

Riverwalk in Mission Valley - the closest to downtown and a good bet if cost is a factor.

...but like I said, it's hard to go wrong and you have tons of choices. If you're having a hard time securing a tee time for Torrey Pines, call The Lodge at Torrey Pines and ask the concierge. If they can't help you, ask them about ticket brokers - there are a couple who buy up open tee times at some of these courses and resell them.

Robinson Ranch Golf Club in Santa Clarita?

Anyone familiar with it? It is a great place to play golf? I want to buy my Stepdad a golfing gift certificate for Father's Day, and The Robinson Ranch is in his area. Their order form is rather "primitive". They want you to fill in the form and fax it back to them along with your credit card number - most places have secure online ordering. I am just a bit skeptical.

Luxury Valley resorts cook up meal deals

Those who still do, whether hotel guests or locals, are on tighter budgets, hoteliers say.

Resorts historically have been able to charge more for meals and just about everything else, from gift-shop Tylenol to Coppertone by the pool because many guests were willing to pay for the ease of staying put.

After the bruising recession, that may be a thing of the past.

"The convenience factor doesn't work anymore," said Andrew Stegen, general manager of the Arizona Biltmore Resort and Spa in Phoenix. "They'll say, 'Look, I'll drive 5 miles because I know I'll pay 'X' amount for dinner.' Whereas before when people were a little more loose with cash, it was, 'I know it's hotel prices, but I'll pay.' "

Well your mom might be materialistic but I’m sure she understands you don’t have much money, or at least I hope she would understand. my suggestion is get something for the both of them that they can share, maybe a gift card to their favorite restaurant so they can go out and enjoy an evening together. And if you have younger siblings offer to babysit them that night free of charge.

I can tell you as a parent that the scrap book is enough for sure. If you really want to get them something else, a cool gift for dad would be a meat smoker. you can find some good, reasonably priced ones here: http://bbq-meat-smokers.com/

For mom consider a nice liz claiborne carry on suitcase. They’re very fashionable, perfect for moms. http://designerluggagelocator.com/Luggage/Claiborne-Luggage
