The first commercial card was designed by JC Horsley, commissioned by Sir Henry Cole of Britain in 1843. Prior to that, handwritten or homemade cards were exchanged. Unfortunately, who sent the first of these homemade cards is lost to time.

We decorate our homes every Christmas but when did tradition of Christmas decorations become traditional? I know that we decorate our Christmas trees because Prince Albert Queen Victoria's Consort brought the tradition over from Germany and when did the tradition of gift giving become traditional was because St Nicholas (aka Santa Clause) left gift in people homes on the 25th December. When did the tradition of sending Christmas cards become a tradition?
A traditional German Christmas is celebrated on 24th of December and called Heiligabend or Holy Eve. German families use this day to put up their Christmas tree and share a simple family meal of frankfurter sausages and potato salad. Afterwards, they have Bescherung which is German for time for exchanging gifts. so we pretty much got our christmas tree idea from germans.
For about 30 years, Americans had to import their Christmas cards from Britain. It wasn't until 1875 that the first Christmas cards was printed in the United States.
And the Christmas cards sent back then really didn't mirror today's popular cards at all. The Christmas cards of yesteryear tended to have things like flowers and faeries. It wasn't until the later years that Christmas cards took on a “holiday theme”

Special cards to help Tidy Towns effort
LUSK Tidy Towns has kept up a 19-year-old tradition in launching special St Patrick's Day card that will be sold locally to aid the local effort in the national competition. Murray's Top Shop was the venue for the launch where a good night was had by all, according to Pat Kelly, stalwart of the local Tidy Towns Committee. Michael Kennedy TD (FF) was asked to perform the official duties and formally launch this year's St Patrick's Day cards which are now available in local stores in the Lusk area. The event was also attended by Minister Trevor Sargent (GP), Cllr Ken Farrell (Lab) and Cllr Darragh Butler (FF).
There was a great turnout for the event despite some very inclement weather and the committee would like to thank everyone who attended the occasion as well as all the generous sponsors of prizes for the raffle held on the night.
Discovering The Tradition of Christmas Greeting Cards | Christmas ...
Christmas greeting cards are one of the most important things to have during Christmas season, apart from the food and the decorations. At some point in our lives, people have managed to send out Christmas cards at least once. This practice is not just done in the United States, but almost every country in the world has a practice of sending out Christmas greeting cards as well. Even though it is such a popular practice, not that many people actually know about its history and why it is so important for people today. Let’s check back into the past and see what the main reason for this practice is.
Christmas Cards: Taking a Look at its Past
When it came to sending out greeting cards, who would have done it better than the Englishman? London is the primary origin of this tradition. Back then, it was a common practice for English folks to send out Christmas greeting cards to friends and family. These were all handwritten or bore some personal greeting from the sender. However, one busy Englishman, by the name of Sir Henry Cole, commissioned the artist, John Callcott Horsley to create and paint greeting cards for him because he simply did not have enough time. He wanted to just be able to add his signature and send out the cards. This went well until after Horsley decided to paint a picture of children enjoying the holiday spirit drinking wine. It saw a sudden end, however, in the 20th century; Kate Greenaway created the first few preprinted cards.
