What ever happened to the good old fashioned Christmas present?
"Old Fashioned Christmas Tree"

When I ask people ...Say what are you giving for Christmas almost everyone has said cash / gift card. What's happened to putting a little thought into the gift? Isn't that what it's all about? Some of these people are giving cash to kids between the ages 4yrs to 13yrs. I think that's just silly. What do you think?

I agree. I think its because people are to obsessed with "pleasing" everyone. When I was a kid (and I'm only 23 btw), if I got something I didn't really want...guess what? I said thank you anyway, because someone took the time to buy or make it for me. What ever happened to its the thought that counts...not how much you spend, or that the gift is perfect?

As for not knowing what they want, why not try asking? All I see is a bunch of excuses. The only reason I can see giving someone cash or a gift card is if they ask for it. (example: My brother and his wife were remodeling their house and asked for home depot cards)

Well thats my opinion. Sorry I'm a bit grinchy this season, I miss when the focus of Christmas wasn't presents.

Vintage Greeting Card Images Christmas Vol 1

Do you love those old Vintage Greeting Cards? This video displays a lot of the images on the vintage cards included on my Vintage Greeting Card ...

Poll: How many snailmail Christmas cards did you get in your actual mailbox this year...?

I am so old fashioned....
I love opening Christmas Cards and getting corny update letters...
Peace.

I rec'd about a dozen that I expected .... and one, in a padded envelope, that I didn't get ..... sniff, sniff ... one card covering a
banana nut bread baking Pez dispenser.

....oh well ... there is always next year!!!!!!

Are these special and fun kinds of Christmas cards still made?

I'm 36. When I was a kid, I used to love getting these special "cards" that I'd get from my family:

They were often large, maybe 11" x 17" (give or take), were sturdy, and they often depicted an old fashioned European village. What was coolest about them was that all the houses and buildings had doors, windows, shutters, that opened and every time you opened one you would put a quarter inside the opening or find one already hidden behind the closure by a family member (usually the latter). If I remember correctly, they were made to count down from Thanksgiving to Christmas, so you'd open one window a day. By the time Christmas day arrived, you'd end up with about 10 dollars in quarters.

Does anyone else remember these? Are they still made? Do they have a special name?

I remember those too! They were really cool.

I haven't seen anything specifically like that for years, but I think they would fall in the category of advent calendars. Maybe you could check at some of the Christian/Religious bookstores in your area and with any luck you can find something similar.

Why the change in Christmas cards nowadays?

The cards I see nowadays are all THE SAME THEME!:Old-fashioned New England snow scenes, complete w/ little white church nestler amongst the pine trees...I'm tired of seeing them over and over!...

When I was little, the cards were varied according to the area of the country you lived in, like this one that I loved:the Santa Monica Pier at sunset, all decked out in colored lights and tinsel draped along the pilings...later, there was Santa and his elves walking along a isolated beach in Newport News, Virginia, w/ his dog following happily along...

Now, the cards are almost alike, either you show that crappy old-fashioned New England-area snow scene or the usual religious scene(you know, angels flying over NYC in the search for Baby JC's manger), or it can no longer legally be called a Christmas card...

I hate to sound like I'm ranting, but I'm serious here...why the change back to "East Coast traditional" cards, when you live in L.A....and it hasn't SNOWED in over 55 years...

What's wrong with "modernizing" Christmas cards?

NO, I'm NOT a Scrooge either!

Thanks!

Hey, Baldwin, I remember that Santa Monica Pier one(it came out in 1990[?] from Hallmark), and I also have that Santa-on-the-Virginia-beach one, too...

You're right, too, when it comes to cards, whether boxed or otherwise...the theme is starting to get too "conservative" nowadays!

Especially if you have family or friends who live in other parts of the world!...like a friend of mine in Germany who works for a major carmaker(I won't say which one!), I'm trying to send him an L.A.-appropriate card, but worried that no one will approve of it...

Don't worry, I have the solution:go to the nearest thrift store or yard sale, especially if they're selling Christmas-themed stuff...maybe you'll find the cards YOU'LL personally like!

Good luck!

Anyone else sick of gift cards being the gift to give/get for Christmas?

Hey I am like anyone else, I appreciate a good gift card once in awhile...but really I think the trend is getting a bit outta hand...what happened to the days where people went shopping in search of the perfect most thoughul gift...and then when given the other person actually appreciated, used and did not return it!

call me old fashioned but isn't that what the spirit of christmas is about??

I so agree with you. The problem is that so many people think that Christmas is about getting exactly what they want. Even children make lists of specific things they demand. It's more like a shopping list, than a wish list. I even know adults who register themselves at amazon so people they know buy what they want. Funnily enough they are the very ones who tend to buy the cheapest gifts and never inquire as to what someone else may enjoy.

It's crazy and I think we all feel the burden of having to comply with these demands but there comes a time we must say, enough is enough.

Give a gift from your heart and if the person doesn't appreciate it, then don't buy them anything next year.

  • PartiCraft Ltd: The Last of the Vintage Samples

I thought that I would post a few last pics from the Vintage Christmas samples before I wrap them up and start showing some sneak peeks from the next stamp set that I am working on at the moment.   I can't say enough about how nice this set is to stamp and play with.  Sam Poole has done an outstanding job with these and there are just so many things that you can do with them.  They lend themselves to a myriad of stamping techniques with great results.  If you are one who really doesn't go in for strictly traditional styled Christmas cards, then this set is for you.  The fun vintage feel and colours of the samples has made  these a true delight....
