How do i check the value of a baseball card online? I thinking about buy some card for hubby for christmas.
Believe it or not, but Ebay is an excellent tool for finding out what a baseball card is currently worth.
If you want more of a "price guide", check out beckett.com. I haven't collected in years, but I'm pretty sure they are still around.
Christmas
My husband has a few Ozzie Smith rookies that I'd like to have preserved and rated for him for Christmas. How would I go about getting the official GEM rating and is there a general price range for rating?
I looked into PSA and it takes membership and is pretty expensive. How do I submit a card to get a GEM rating? I don't want to mail it anywhere. Is this something that I take to an authorized dealer? I just want an idea so I don't get taken advantage of at some collector shop
You have to mail the cards in, there is no other way. The examine the cards with microscopes and lasers, literally. And you're right, it is expensive. The prices for grading are based on how many cards you send in. I usually send them in 20 -30 at at time, and they cost about $10 per card. Just sending in a couple cards might cost about $25 per card. So make sure that the card is in good shape. If you were to send in that Ozzie rookie (1978 Topps, I think, books for about $80 ungraded) and it came back as a 9 (mint), the card could easily sell for $200. If you were lucky enough for it to come back as a 9.5 or a 10 (which are extremely rare) the card would fetch upwards of $1000.
BUT..........
If you send in the card and it comes back as a 7, you could only hope that it be sold for maybe $20. So check the cards, make sure they appear properly centered (that is a huge factor, seriously, if a card isn't properly centered, it's almost worthless), Are the corners sharp? And I mean perfect right angle sharp, no dog ears. Are there any creases, bends, ink flaws in the photo? If all of these things look good, to the naked eye only then is it worth spending the money on professional grading.
The two best companies to get gradings from are Beckett (beckett.com) and PSA. The are very tough on their grading system and a highly rated card is truly a valuable thing. There are other companies out there that don't charge as much, but the give out 9s and 10s like candy on Halloween. Getting a good grading from them doesn't really increase the value of the card.
You need to get a form, should be availabe on the website or in a Beckett priceguide magazine. When you mail them in, you should probably buy the insurance for the estimated value, can't take chances. And then, depending on which time frame you pick (If you want the cards back in one week, say, it costs twice as much) you simply wait for the cards to come back in the mail. They will be sealed in a protective plastic case and adorned with a certification sticker displaying the cards overall grade and a UPC code making the card identifyable unique.
That's a cool gift. He'll really appreciate it. But like I said, make sure the cards are even worth rating. You might want to go to a local dealer and have them examine the card. They should be able to identify rather quickly if the cards are grade worthy.
Good Luck
I got my Xbox 360 for christmas, and I got Left 4 Dead 2 with it, and I saw that in the box the game+case was in, had a card in it, and I told my dad "woa! this is an exclusive that you only get when pre-ordering it!" "how'd you get it??" he said the guy he bought it from gave it to him? why?
Sometimes the places you can pre-order the games from have extras of the pre-order bonuses, so they give them out with regular purchases for a while too. Also sometimes people may just want the game and not want the pre-order bonus.

From Mexico to the big leagues, Rafael Martin is the most improbable story of ...
On Sunday morning, Martin pulled on a crisp, white Washington Nationals jersey and took his turn posing on the infield of Space Coast Stadium so a photographer could turn him into a baseball card. He waited until noon before heading out to practice the pitches that the team's highest-ranking evaluators believe will soon make him a major league pitcher, most likely this season. That is his life now. "Maybe someday," he said, "they'll make a movie about it."
At once, Martin, 25, is the most improbable story of Nationals spring training and the most concrete success of their remade international scouting operation . After his four years in construction, Martin made the Mexican League after catching a scout's eye at a tryout he attended on a whim. Three years later, he had become one of the league's best relievers, a commodity at least 10 teams vied for this winter. Armed with personal connections and the best financial offer, the Nationals bought his contract and added to their organization a fairy tale.
Leaf Baseball Card Values
Listed on this page are vintage leaf baseball cards as well as many from the 1980's and modern era cards. These cards contain many different old baseball card items. Those are from 1949 Leaf when they had a baseball card set that has a short printed rookie card of Satchel Paige in it that books for $12,000 along with a high book value card of Joe DiMaggio among many others. There is also a 1960 Leaf set in baseball.
The baseball card values for Leaf cards contain values from vintage cards, such as the 1960 Leaf Set, as well as modern cards. The 1990 Leaf Set with Frank Thomas and Sammy Sosa rookie cards is one of the more limited baseball card sets from the 1990's. It carries a higher value than most of the other sets from that era. It is a great investment and when considering some of the most affordable and valuable sets from Leaf, that has to be right up there.
