Special Birthday Greeting Cards

Our three children receive many cards on birthdays and special occasions. Should the cards be kept, or is it okay to throw them out?

Whether to keep or recycle greeting cards is a very personal matter. If the greeting card is hand-made, then it may be very sentimental to the receiver who may wish to keep it for many years. Some greeting cards, such as Christmas or holiday cards, are often kept until the next holiday season.

Particularly beautiful cards can be framed, kept in a scrapbook, made into a collage or donated to organizations that use the card fronts to make new cards. Or, you can make your own new card from used cards by attaching the card front to a new folded sturdy paper or card stock!!!

Does anyone know where I can purchase those greeting cards where you can record your own personal message which plays when you open the card? I won't be home for my little sister's 13th birthday but I want to do something special. I'm buying her thirteen different gifts and I wanted to give her one of these cards to go along with them.

I think the bigger Hallmark stores have them.

How long do you usually wait before you toss a greeting, holiday or birthday card? Right after reading it? It might be awkward if they see it in your trash bin. Or do you save it in a special box and treasure it always?

I think it depends on who gave it to you.

If it is from a person you are not that familiar with at all, then keep it past the occasion for a week.

If it is from a person who is close to you, keep it past the occasion for a month or two.

If it is a card you like very much, then save it. I think it also depends on the occasion (i.e. wedding or baby birth) are cards that should be saved.

Other than that, don't worry about it. I never had a person (that has given me a card) ask me "Hey, remember that card I gave you? Can I see it again?"

instead of traditional Birthday, Christmas, and other greeting cards in the mail? I like to keep those that are special to me. I have two daughters who are lazy and send me stupid e-greetings instead of taking the time to buy one and mail it. They're always accepting gifts from my husband and me but never give us one. Both are married with families of their own.
