How to address invitation/holiday cards if spouse's name is unknown and no kids are in the picture?

Sending out birthday invitations and Christmas cards to friends and clients but don't know many of their spouse's names. Many addressees are reporters, an industry in which names are commonly changed, so I can't assume the spouse's last name is the same. Any suggestions on a clever way to address the envelope so they know I also am inviting the spouse but don't give away that I don't remember their name? Please help!
Thanks for answers so far. Just to clarify, kiddos are not invited and most clients are women, so I can't address to Mr. & Mrs. Guy's Last Name.

Simply address it to:
Mr. John Doe and family

what to put on birthday invitation cards?

i have where (including where parents need to pick up their kid, and what we will be doing the whole time) when (including the day of the party, and the time), i have who's invited, and a little message saying don't tell anyone your invited (much nicer)! so do i need to put anything else on it? i was thinking about putting the things i would like (gift cards to aeropostale, earrings, necklaces, etc) should i put that on there? please help!
i have that to, i forgot to mention! and the title is "You’re invited to Hannah’s birthday extravaganza!" i have the rsvp, and i am not having a sleepover!
i have to put who is invited because if they forget, they might ask someone then they will say no (if they weren't invited) then they would get mad at me and etc!
i am the kid.....i am the one planning my party! my parents would have me and 2 friends go roller skating for 2 hours....

Wow !!! When I was invited to somebody's birthday party all it said was "Please come to my party - there are lots of fun activities and things to enjoy! - RSVP to..."

If you want to include a detailed note for the parents about what activity young Timmy is going to be doing at precisely 1537hrs - use a different piece of paper. It was always nice to receive a card invitation as a kid, without having all the fun taken away by status-logs and logistics.

Tell the parents what is happening: activities that everybody can join in with. How many kids do you expect at this event, what age-range will be there, and how much help have you got to manage everything (do you need volunteers)?

What kind of foods are you feeding these kids with - are there any allergies you need to be made aware of? Are the kids likely to be tired when they're picked up, or just HYPER-excited?

How to get a hold of you in the meantime, and who to contact in an emergency.

Gifts are a tricky one. Personally, I would never insist that a child be forced to present a gift - whatever happened to "I'm so glad you could come"? Of course, listing things that you feel are appropriate gives a good idea for what to bring, but don't ask for the moon.

Always ask that they call you beforehand to accept (RSVP) - so you can gauge numbers attending and marshall enough friends to stop your party turning into a riot.

At the party - remember that while this is your kids party - you get to enjoy yourself too!
(How often do you get to let it all go, and pretend to be young again?)
